MANILA, Philippines—at the recent NYFW, luxury brands such as the likes of Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci showcased their newest collections that were distinctly designed to rule the streets. A recurring theme among them is how they unabashedly embraced the chunky sneaker trend. Described as everything from “unconventional” to “awkward” to “ugly”, these standout kicks are creating high demand and waves in the streets of New York.

From catwalk to sidewalk, social media frenzy, ‘dad sneakers’ are all the rage. What used to be considered a ‘social outcast’ and ‘unfashionable’ has suddenly become the much promulgated trend du jour, and a must-have item to complete your street style.

Smack in the middle of this new wave of cult-worthy trainers is the resurgence of one of the original icons of the late 90s and early 2000s. Skechers D’lites, the original ‘chunky monkey’ of athletic lifestyle footwear, first surfaced in the late 90’s and was catapulted to mainstream fashion by Britney Spears. Matched with the pop princess’s signature flare/washed out denims and signature sexy-sporty style, these Skechers shoes defined a generation; bringing more than a tinge of nostalgia to a lot of us just thinking about it.

After more than a decade, Skechershas brought back the 90’s icon better than ever with an updated silhouette, and to huge fanfare—literally. First relaunchedin South Korea a few years back with global K-pop groups SISTAR and EXO as the face of the collection, the chunky D’Lites heritage sneaker subsequently became a smash hit in Asian countries like Korea, China, Japan, Hong Kong. Quickly sold out in stores everywhere; paving the way for succeeding collections and eventually, finding its way back to the USA and Canada.

This summer, Skechers Philippines will be releasing its women’s collection of D’Lites 2 Sweet Monster exclusively at The Nines shop.

With a modern edgy look, added memory foam cushioning on the insole and a lighter construction, Skechers D’Lites 2 Sweet Monster is all about the convergence of retro hip and street swag.

DRESSING UP YOUR D’LITES TO THE NINES

To launch its D’lites campaign, Skechers Philippines has partnered with retailer the Nines to develop a ‘Retro Renegade’ streetwear lookbook.

Along with this drop is a thematic line up of new pieces from international streetwear apparel brands Champion, Thrasher, and Carrots by The Hundreds; all boast bright, bold colors and statements that express the ‘renegade’ attitude.

The Retro Renegade lookbook is a venture to challenge current standards and aesthetics considering that in the past few years, street fashion has grown exponentially, focusing more on the people, attitude, and values.

“The Skechers D’Lites 2 Sweet Monster and the resurgence of such a heritage silhouette represents a statement in itself. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here. The Retro Renegade campaign is about democratizing diverse street styles; meshing them together to create a luxe yet approachable look. Yes, we’re associating the projec twith being rebellious and unapologetic similar to what many streetwear brands stand for these days but we’re doing it on our own terms.”
- Brent Javier, Creative Director for The Nines.

Today, the Skechers D’Lites heritage sneaker extends itself well beyond a niche look and retro roots. The chunky dad sneaker trend has been brewing for a while, and if social media, runways and streets all over the world (both uptown and downtown) are any indication, it is now dominating the world of fashion. From street to luxury, all point to a new sensation—the ‘ugly’, unconventional, and unapologetic.
